The Ultimate 7-Day Ghana Itinerary: Culture, History, and Adventure

Why Ghana Should Be Your Next Travel Destination

Ghana is one of Africa's most welcoming countries — a vibrant blend of rich history, diverse culture, stunning coastline, and warm hospitality. Whether you're tracing the roots of the transatlantic slave trade, exploring lush rainforests, or dancing to live highlife music in Accra, Ghana offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

This comprehensive 7-day itinerary is designed by the travel experts at Secure Travel and ToursAccra's most trusted travel agency — to help you experience the very best of Ghana from coast to forest.

Best Time to Visit Ghana

Ghana sits close to the equator, so temperatures are warm year-round (25–32°C). The best times to visit are:

  • November to March — dry season, ideal for outdoor activities and festivals
  • July to August — short dry season, great for travel with fewer crowds
  • April to June — rainy season in the south, lush and green but expect afternoon showers

For detailed weather information, check the Ghana Meteorological Agency.

Day 1: Arrive in Accra — The Gateway to Ghana

Morning: Arrival at Kotoka International Airport

Your Ghanaian adventure begins at Kotoka International Airport (ACC), one of West Africa's most modern airports. After clearing immigration and customs, your driver will transfer you to your hotel.

Pro tip: Book your airport transfer and accommodation through a trusted agency to avoid last-minute hassles.

Afternoon: Explore Jamestown & the Lighthouse

Head to Jamestown, Accra's oldest district and the cultural heart of the city. Climb the historic Jamestown Lighthouse for panoramic views of the coastline and fishing harbour. Walk through the vibrant streets, see the colourful fishing boats at the harbour, and experience local life up close.

Evening: Osu Oxford Street & Dinner

End your day at Osu Oxford Street, Accra's lively nightlife and shopping hub. Enjoy traditional Ghanaian dishes like jollof rice, banku with tilapia, or kelewele at a local restaurant.

Where to eat: Buka Restaurant, Azmera, or Country Kitchen for authentic Ghanaian cuisine.

Day 2: Accra — History and Culture

Morning: Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park

Visit the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, dedicated to Ghana's founding father and Africa's foremost pan-Africanist. The park houses his mausoleum, a museum with personal artefacts, and beautiful gardens.

Midday: National Museum of Ghana

Explore the National Museum of Ghana, home to archaeological and ethnographic collections spanning centuries of Ghanaian history. Learn about the Ashanti Kingdom, colonial history, and traditional arts.

Afternoon: Makola Market & Arts Centre

Experience the buzz of Makola Market, Accra's largest open-air market. Then visit the Arts Centre (Centre for National Culture) to shop for authentic kente cloth, carved masks, beaded jewellery, and other traditional crafts.

Morning: Drive to Cape Coast (2.5 hours)

Depart Accra early for Cape Coast, the former capital of the Gold Coast colony. The scenic coastal drive passes through fishing villages and palm-fringed beaches.

Midday: Cape Coast Castle

Tour Cape Coast Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most significant historical sites in Africa. Built in 1653, it served as a major hub in the transatlantic slave trade. Walk through the haunting dungeons and the "Door of No Return" — a deeply moving and educational experience.

Afternoon: Elmina Castle

Just 15 minutes from Cape Coast, visit Elmina Castle, the oldest European building in sub-Saharan Africa (built in 1482 by the Portuguese). The fishing harbour at Elmina is one of the most photogenic spots in Ghana.

For a fully guided experience, book our Cape Coast Heritage Tour.

Evening: Sunset at Coconut Grove Beach Resort

Relax at a beachfront resort in Cape Coast and watch the sunset over the Atlantic Ocean.

Day 4: Kakum National Park — Canopy Walk

Morning: Kakum Canopy Walkway

Visit Kakum National Park, home to Ghana's famous canopy walkway — a series of suspension bridges 40 metres above the tropical rainforest floor. The 350-metre walkway offers breathtaking views of the forest canopy and is one of only three such structures in Africa.

You can spot over 300 bird species, rare forest elephants, and various primates. Arrive early (before 9 AM) for the best experience.

Book it: Our Kakum Canopy Walkway tour package includes transport, park entry, and a professional guide.

Afternoon: Hans Cottage Botel

Stop at Hans Cottage Botel, a unique lakeside lodge where you can see crocodiles basking in the sun while you enjoy lunch on the water. It's a quirky and memorable experience.

Day 5: Kumasi — Heart of the Ashanti Kingdom

Morning: Manhyia Palace Museum

Evening: Kumasi Nightlife

Enjoy Kumasi's vibrant food scene with fufu and light soup, the signature dish of the Ashanti region.

Day 6: Mole National Park or Wli Waterfalls

Depending on your preference, choose one of these incredible day trips:

Option A: Mole National Park (Northern Ghana)

Mole National Park is Ghana's largest wildlife reserve, home to elephants, baboons, warthogs, antelopes, and over 300 bird species. A guided walking safari brings you face-to-face with elephants at the watering hole — an unforgettable experience.

Note: Mole requires a domestic flight or overnight drive from Kumasi. We recommend booking our Mole Safari Adventure which includes all logistics.

Option B: Wli Waterfalls (Volta Region)

If you prefer waterfalls to wildlife, head to Wli Waterfalls, the tallest waterfall in West Africa at 80 metres. The 45-minute hike through lush forest to the lower falls is stunning, with thousands of fruit bats circling the cascade.

Our Wli Waterfalls Trek is one of our most popular packages.

Day 7: Ada Foah & Departure

  • Boat cruises on the Volta River to Songor Lagoon

  • Water sports — kayaking, jet skiing, and swimming
  • Relaxing on pristine, uncrowded beaches

Explore our Ada Foah River Escape for a hassle-free experience.
