Canada SDS Student Visa from Ghana: The Fast-Track Route to a Study Permit (2026)

Why Canada?

Canada is one of the top destinations for Ghanaian students, offering world-class education, post-graduation work permits, and a pathway to permanent residency. Over 3,000 Ghanaians move to Canada annually for studies.

Step 1: Get Admitted to a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)

Before applying for a study permit, you need an acceptance letter from a DLI. Popular choices for Ghanaian students include:

  • University of Toronto — engineering, business, sciences
  • Conestoga College — practical diploma and post-graduate programs
  • University of Manitoba — affordable tuition with strong support for international students
  • Centennial College — located in Toronto with diverse program offerings

Application Tips

  • Apply to at least 3 schools to increase your options
  • Start early — applications open 12 months before intake
  • Ensure your academic transcripts are properly certified

Step 2: Understand the Student Direct Stream (SDS)

The SDS is a fast-track processing stream for study permit applications. To qualify from Ghana, you need:

  1. Acceptance from a DLI enrolled in the SDS program
  2. IELTS score — minimum 6.0 in each band
  3. GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate) — CAD $20,635 deposited at a participating Canadian bank
  4. First year tuition paid — receipt from your school
  5. Medical exam — completed before applying

SDS applications are typically processed within 20 calendar days, compared to 8–12 weeks for regular applications.

Step 3: Financial Documentation

This is where most Ghanaian applications fail. You need to prove you can afford:

  • Tuition for the full program (or first year minimum)
  • Living expenses — approximately CAD $10,000–$15,000 per year
  • Return transportation

What to Provide

  • 12 months of bank statements (yours and/or your sponsor's)
  • Sponsor's employment letter and tax returns
  • Scholarship letters (if applicable)
  • GIC receipt
  • Loan approval letter (if financing through a bank)

Step 4: Apply for Your Study Permit

Submit your application online through the IRCC portal. You'll need:

  • Acceptance letter from DLI
  • Proof of identity (passport)
  • Financial documents
  • Statement of Purpose (SOP) — explain why you chose Canada and your program
  • Police clearance certificate from Ghana Police Service
  • Medical exam results

Step 5: Biometrics

After submitting, you'll be asked to give biometrics at the VFS Global centre in Accra. The fee is CAD $85.

Processing Times

Stream Estimated Time
