First International Trip from Ghana? 10 Things to Sort Before You Book

Planning your first trip abroad from Ghana? From passport validity and travel insurance to the right vaccinations and currency, here are the 10 essentials to handle before contacting any travel agency.

First International Trip from Ghana? 10 Things to Sort Before You Book

Picking a travel agency in Accra in 2026 is harder than it sounds

Twenty years ago, a "travel agency in Accra" usually meant a small office in Ridge or Adabraka — a phone, a kettle, and a stack of airline brochures. Today the scene is unrecognisable. There are well over 400 registered agencies in Ghana and probably twice as many "WhatsApp agents" promising cheap flights, fast visas and prices that, frankly, don't add up.

Most are honest. A handful are excellent. A few will collect your $1,500 visa fee, ghost you for a week, and disappear with your passport. And even among the good ones, the real difference shows up in the moments that actually matter — a missed connection in Doha, a Schengen refusal letter, a hotel that "lost" your reservation at 11 pm in Dubai.

This is the article we'd hand to a friend before they wired a single cedi. It's the questions to ask, the receipts to demand, and the polite ways to walk away.

A note on this guide: it's based on what we've seen running a registered Accra agency since 2013, not legal advice. Always verify any company directly with the Ghana Tourism Authority and TOUGHA. And no honest agency — us included — can guarantee a visa. The embassy decides.

How the industry has shifted

Three things have reshaped travel agencies in Accra in the last few years:

  1. Online-only operators running entirely from Instagram and WhatsApp, no physical office, no receipts.
  2. "Guaranteed visa" scammers preying on first-time UK, US, Canada and Schengen applicants.
  3. A growing premium tier of full-service agencies offering proper consultations, ticketing partnerships and after-trip support.

Knowing which of those three you're dealing with is the single most useful filter you can apply.

The 10 Questions to Ask Before Paying Any Deposit

Print this list. Ask every agency. Compare answers.

  1. Are you registered with the Ghana Tourism Authority and TOUGHA? Ask for the registration number.
  2. What is your physical office address? Then visit it — even briefly.
  3. Who is your ticketing partner? Reputable agencies in Ghana issue tickets through partners; ask for the partner's name.
  4. What is your refund policy if my visa is denied?
  5. Will my deposit be paid into a registered company account? (Walk away if asked to send mobile money to a personal number.)
  6. Can I see three recent client testimonials I can call directly?
  7. Do you provide a written, itemised quotation? (No quote = no deal.)
  8. Who handles emergencies during my trip — is there a 24/7 line?
  9. What happens if my flight is cancelled or my hotel is overbooked?
  10. Are you willing to put your guarantees in writing?

If an agency refuses or stumbles on more than two of these, end the conversation.

What to Verify Before You Trust an Accra Travel Agency

1. Ghana Tourism Authority Licence

Every legitimate travel agency in Ghana must be registered with the Ghana Tourism Authority and licensed under the Tourism Act, 2011 (Act 817). The licence number should appear on receipts, contracts and websites.

2. TOUGHA Membership

The Tour Operators Union of Ghana is the industry self-regulator. Membership is voluntary but signals professional commitment.

3. Physical Office and Staff

A real travel agency has a physical office. We are headquartered in Dansoman, Accra — feel free to visit (read our about page). Online-only operators with no physical office should be a yellow flag.

4. Bank Account in Company Name

Genuine agencies receive payments into a registered business account with their company name on the receipt. Mobile money requests to a personal account are the most common pattern in scam cases reported to the Ghana Police Service.

For a real-world look at how these scams unfold, read our fraud alert page.

5. Verifiable Client Reviews

Look for named, dated reviews on Google Maps and the agency's site. Ask for two clients you can call directly — a real agency will provide them within 24 hours.

Red Flags That Should End the Conversation Immediately

Walk away if you see any of these:

  • "100% guaranteed visa approval" — illegal in Ghana and impossible to deliver. Embassies make decisions, not agencies.
  • Asking you to lie on your visa application ("just write you have a wife", "just say you have a job at this company we will give you").
  • Mobile money payments to a personal number instead of a company account.
  • No written quote — only voice notes and verbal pricing.
  • Office address that does not exist when you Google Maps it.
  • Pressure to pay "today only" to "lock in the embassy slot".
  • Refusal to issue a receipt with a TIN number.
  • WhatsApp-only contact, no email, no phone landline.

What a Professional Accra Travel Agency Should Actually Provide

A serious agency should offer most of the following — and be transparent about which it does in-house and which it outsources:

Pricing: What "Cheap" Really Costs You

The cheapest agency in Accra is almost always the most expensive in the long run. Here's what gets cut:

  • Flexible tickets — replaced with the cheapest non-refundable fare. One date change costs more than the savings.
  • Travel insurance — skipped entirely. One missed flight wipes out the discount.
  • Hotel verification — booked sight unseen on Booking.com without checking that the property still exists.
  • Visa quality control — applications submitted in 48 hours instead of 7 days, with predictable rejections.

We have written about this trade-off in detail in our fastest way to secure a travel visa post.

How Reputable Agencies Charge for Visa Assistance

Honest pricing in 2026 looks roughly like this (excluding embassy fees):

Service Realistic 2026 Price (GHS)
UK visitor visa assistance 1,800 – 3,500
US B1/B2 visa assistance 2,500 – 4,500
Canada visitor visa assistance 2,200 – 4,000
Schengen visa assistance 1,500 – 3,000
Dubai tourist visa 800 – 1,500
South Africa visa 1,200 – 2,500

Anything dramatically below these ranges is either a loss-leader or a scam. Anything dramatically above usually pays for "fixers" you do not need.

The Local Question: Are "Travel Agency Near Me" Searches Helpful?

Searching "travel agency near me in Accra" is fine for rough discovery, but a near-me result does not equal credibility. The criteria above matter more than proximity. That said, a physical Accra office is genuinely useful for:

  • Dropping off original documents
  • Picking up passports with stamped visas
  • Cash payments and printed receipts
  • Final pre-trip briefings before long flights

If you live in Dansoman, Mamprobi, Kaneshie, Ablekuma, Awoshie or Odorkor, our Dansoman office is the closest registered agency with a 98% visa success rate.

A final, honest word

Choosing an agency in Accra in 2026 isn't really about who has the slickest logo or the loudest Instagram. It comes down to process, paperwork and the people behind the desk. Ask the ten questions above. Visit the office. Insist on a written quote. Pay only into a company account. Get a receipt with a TIN. Save the WhatsApp thread.

If anyone makes you feel rushed, vague, or pressured into "today only" decisions — that's your answer. Walk. The trip you're planning matters too much to start it with the wrong partner.
