The Ultimate Guide to Mole National Park: Best Time to Visit and Safari Costs

Everything Ghanaians and international travellers need to plan a Mole National Park safari in 2026 — best months to visit, walking and jeep safari costs, getting from Accra to Mole, where to stay, what to pack and how to book.

The Ultimate Guide to Mole National Park: Best Time to Visit and Safari Costs

Why Mole is the trip every Ghanaian should take at least once

Mole sits in Ghana's Savannah Region, and at 4,840 square kilometres it's by far the country's largest wildlife reserve — savanna, gallery forest, seasonal rivers, around 94 mammal species and well over 300 birds on record. It's also one of the most accessible safaris in West Africa, which still surprises a lot of first-timers.

For Ghanaians, Mole is the perfect long-weekend road trip. You can watch elephants drink from a watering hole below your hotel pool without ever leaving the country. For visitors flying in, it's the easiest culture-meets-wildlife week on the continent that doesn't involve East Africa.

This guide pulls together everything we've learned running Mole trips since 2014: when to go, how to actually get there from Accra or Tamale, the real 2026 costs, where to sleep, what to pack, and how to avoid the small but expensive mistakes most first-timers make.

A quick note: prices, schedules and operating hours below are accurate as of May 2026 but the park, lodges and airlines all set their own terms. Always reconfirm before you travel — and check directly with the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission, Mole Motel or your tour operator.

Where Is Mole National Park?

Mole National Park is in the Savannah Region of northern Ghana, near the village of Larabanga, about 730 km north of Accra and 170 km west of Tamale. The park headquarters and Mole Motel sit on an escarpment overlooking a watering hole — the iconic vantage point you have probably seen in photos of elephants drinking metres below a swimming pool.

Best Time to Visit Mole National Park (Month-by-Month)

The single most important planning decision is when to go. Mole has two distinct seasons.

Dry Season (November – March): The Best Time

This is the peak wildlife-viewing window. The bush is sparse, water sources shrink, and animals — especially elephants — concentrate around the main watering hole below Mole Motel.

  • November: Warm days (33°C), cool nights, low humidity. Excellent for safaris.
  • December – early January: Peak season. Book accommodation 3+ months in advance. Harmattan haze affects photography.
  • Late January – February: Cooler nights (down to 18°C), excellent visibility, our personal favourite.
  • March: Hottest month (up to 40°C in afternoons). Early-morning safaris essential.

Wet Season (April – October): For Birders and Budget Travellers

The bush is thick, animals scatter — but birdlife is at its peak, the landscape is lush, and accommodation is 20–30% cheaper.

  • April – May: Transition months, occasional storms, beautiful greens.
  • June – August: Heaviest rains. Some park roads become impassable; jeep safaris may be cancelled.
  • September – October: Rains taper, vegetation still green, fewer tourists. Underrated value.

Quick Recommendation

  • Best month overall: January or February — wildlife concentrated, weather mild, no Harmattan haze.
  • Best month for budget travellers: September or October.
  • Best month for serious birders: June – August.

How to Get from Accra to Mole National Park

There are four realistic options.

Option 1: Fly Accra → Tamale, then drive (recommended)

The fastest and most comfortable way. Both Africa World Airlines and Passion Air operate daily Accra–Tamale flights (~1 hour, GH₵ 800–1,400 one way). From Tamale, it is a 3-hour drive to Mole.

Total time: 4–5 hours door to gate.

Option 2: Drive yourself or hire a chauffeur from Accra

A 10–12 hour drive via Kumasi, Kintampo and Damongo. Long but scenic. Book a chauffeured car rental for safety on the unfamiliar northern roads — our chauffeur-only policy keeps you covered. Expect to pay GH₵ 700–1,200 per day for a 4WD with driver.

Suggested overnight stop: Kumasi (read our Accra to Kumasi travel guide).

Option 3: VIP coach to Tamale, then taxi/STC bus to Mole

VIP buses such as VVIP, VIP Jeoun and STC run overnight Accra → Tamale (GH₵ 300–450). From Tamale, the Mole STC bus departs Sunday, Tuesday, Friday around 1pm (GH₵ 100). Cheapest option but requires patience.

Option 4: Full tour package

The least stressful option for international visitors. Our 4-day Mole National Park Safari from $720 includes the round-trip Accra–Tamale flight, transfers, accommodation, all safaris and meals.

What Wildlife You Will Actually See at Mole

Realistic expectations matter. Mole is not the Serengeti — there are no lions, giraffes or zebras. What you will see, especially in the dry season:

  • African forest elephants (almost guaranteed at the watering hole)
  • Olive baboons and patas monkeys
  • Warthogs
  • Kob, waterbuck and bushbuck antelope
  • Crocodiles at Larabanga ponds
  • 300+ bird species — kingfishers, hornbills, bee-eaters, raptors

For best wildlife photography, the 6:30 am sunrise walking safari consistently outperforms the afternoon jeep safari.

Cultural Add-Ons Within 30 Minutes of Mole

  • Larabanga Mosque — one of West Africa's oldest mosques, built in the Sudano-Sahelian style around the 1400s. See the UNESCO description of West African mosques.
  • Mognori Eco-village — community-run shea butter demonstrations and a 30-minute canoe trip on the Mole River.
  • Damongo town market — small, atmospheric Sunday market with northern crafts.

What to Pack for a Mole Safari

  • Neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, olive, brown). Avoid bright colours and white.
  • Closed walking shoes for the morning walking safari.
  • Wide-brim hat and high-SPF sunscreen — equatorial sun is intense.
  • Insect repellent with DEET — mosquitoes carry malaria year-round.
  • Reusable water bottle — refill at Mole Motel.
  • Binoculars and a camera with a long lens (200–400mm ideal).
  • Power bank — generator power can be intermittent.
  • Cash in small cedi notes — tipping rangers (GH₵ 30–50 per safari) is customary.

Health and Safety at Mole

  • Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for entry to Ghana. Bring your card.
  • Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended for any northern Ghana trip. Consult your doctor 6 weeks before.
  • Walking safaris are conducted with armed rangers for protection against elephants, not poachers.
  • Stay 50 metres from elephants at all times — they can charge.
  • Drink bottled water only.
  • Travel insurance is non-negotiable — see our travel insurance for Ghanaians 2026 guide.
