Beyond Cape Coast: 7 Hidden Ghanaian Destinations You Haven't Discovered Yet

Why Look Beyond Cape Coast?

Cape Coast Castle, Kakum's canopy walk and the beaches of Elmina deserve every bit of their fame — but Ghana is far bigger than its tourist trail. The same country also hides waterfalls taller than Niagara's drop, a 700-year-old mosque, a village built entirely on water, and rainforest where forest elephants still roam quietly. These 7 hidden destinations are where our Secure Travel and Tours team takes clients who tell us, "show me the Ghana most visitors miss."

Safety reminder: a few of these destinations are remote. Always travel with a licensed local guide, never share your full itinerary with strangers, and book through a registered agency.

1. Wli Falls, Volta Region — West Africa's Tallest Waterfall

Tucked into the Agumatsa Wildlife Sanctuary on the Ghana–Togo border, Wli Falls plunges roughly 80 metres on its upper tier and is the tallest waterfall in West Africa. The lower fall is an easy 45-minute forest walk; the upper fall is a serious 3-hour hike rewarded by thousands of fruit bats spiralling above the cliff face.

  • Best time: August–November (full flow).
  • From Accra: 4.5 hours via Ho.
  • Pair with: Mount Afadja (Afadjato), Ghana's highest peak, 15 minutes away.

2. Nzulezu Stilt Village, Western Region

A 90-minute canoe paddle through the Amansuri wetlands brings you to Nzulezu, a 500-year-old village built entirely on stilts above the lake. Listed on UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list, it's one of only a handful of stilt settlements in Africa.

  • Best time: Dry season (December–March) for easier road access.
  • From Accra: 6 hours via Takoradi and Beyin.
  • Pair with: Ankasa Conservation Area (Ghana's wettest rainforest, see our Ghana safari guide).

3. Larabanga Mosque, Northern Region

Often called the "Mecca of West Africa," the Larabanga Mosque is one of the oldest mud-and-stick mosques in West Africa — dated by historians to around the 15th century. Its whitewashed Sudano-Sahelian architecture is unforgettable at sunset.

  • From Accra: Fly to Tamale (1 hour), then 2.5 hours by road.
  • Pair with: Mole National Park — read our dedicated Mole safari guide for elephant tracking on foot.

4. Boti Falls & the Three-Headed Palm Tree, Eastern Region

Boti Falls is a twin waterfall outside Koforidua, traditionally called "male and female" by locals. The 20-minute hike beyond the falls leads to the famous three-headed palm tree and the Umbrella Rock — a geological oddity that genuinely looks like a giant stone umbrella.

  • Best time: Mid-June to August.
  • From Accra: 2 hours — perfect day trip.
  • Pair with: Akosombo Dam and Lake Volta cruise.

5. Paga Crocodile Pond, Upper East Region

In Paga, on the Burkina Faso border, you can sit on the back of a 4-metre-long sacred crocodile. Locals have lived peacefully with the reptiles for centuries — they're believed to host the spirits of ancestors and have never harmed a villager in recorded history.

  • From Accra: Fly to Tamale, then 3 hours by road.
  • Pair with: Sirigu's painted houses and the Tongo Hills shrines.

6. Wechiau Community Hippo Sanctuary, Upper West

Ghana's only hippopotamus sanctuary stretches 40 km along the Black Volta River. Run by the local community since 1999, Wechiau is one of West Africa's best ecotourism success stories. Dawn river safaris give you a near-guaranteed sighting of a hippo pod.

  • Best time: December–April (water levels concentrate the pods).
  • From Accra: Fly to Tamale, then 3 hours to Wa, then 1 hour to Wechiau.
  • Pair with: Mole National Park on the way back.

7. Ada Foah & the Volta Estuary, Greater Accra

Just 110 km east of Accra, Ada Foah is where the Volta River meets the Atlantic. Hire a private boat to a sandbar island, watch the river-meets-ocean horizon, and stay at a quiet eco-lodge like Maranatha Beach Camp or Aqua Safari Resort.

  • Best time: Year-round.
  • From Accra: 2 hours.
  • Pair with: Songor Lagoon birdwatching and the Atorkor heritage village.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best hidden destination in Ghana?

It depends on what you love. For waterfalls, Wli Falls in the Volta Region is unmatched as West Africa's tallest. For culture, the 15th-century Larabanga Mosque in the Northern Region is iconic. For wildlife, Wechiau Hippo Sanctuary on the Black Volta is the most unique.

How long do I need to explore Ghana beyond Cape Coast?

Plan at least 10 days to comfortably combine the Volta Region, Northern Ghana (Mole and Larabanga), Upper West (Wechiau hippos) and the Upper East (Paga crocodiles). Less than that means flying internally to save days.

Is it safe to visit northern Ghana?

Yes. Northern Ghana, including Mole, Tamale, Wa and Bolgatanga, is generally safe for tourists when you travel with a licensed guide. Always check your country's travel advisory before booking — and avoid border-edge areas without an experienced driver.

Do I need a 4×4 for these destinations?

For Wechiau, Nzulezu access road, and many northern routes, yes — a 4×4 with a Ghanaian chauffeur is strongly recommended. Our car-rental service handles this end to end.

Can Secure Travel and Tours arrange this trip for non-Ghanaian visitors?

Absolutely. We work with travellers from the US, UK, EU and across Africa. We arrange e-visas, internal flights, lodges, guides and airport pickup — fully managed from arrival at Kotoka to departure.
